THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS
MONDAY
Poor Baron Avram. He got sacked over the weekend after ONLY getting to two cup finals and coming a close second in the title race in his first half year in charge of Chelsea. Obviously this isn't anywhere near good enough for Roman Abramovich and his sinister sidekick Peter Kenyon, so they've ditched him, while promising Henk Ten Cate that his job is safe. Well, at least until tomorrow, because the search to replace The Baron is well underway.
The updated criteria for the new man is 'must be handsome, but not more handsome than Roman. Must be strong enough to dominate ego-laden dressing roo, but not strong enough to stand up to frequent interference from above. Must win everything ever, and do so in a way that provides spectacular entertainment and excitement at all times. Must smile occasionally. MUST win Champions League as soon as possible. Preferably within first week of employment.'
The only thing more tiresome than all the speculation about Chelsea's new puppet is of course, the speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo's future employers. There's still plenty of double-talk from the player himself and from Real Madrid. The latest news is that Ronaldo is very happy to stay, but is flattered by the interest and would love to play in Spain, and only God knows the future, but at the moment he is very happy to stay. In a couple of moments, he might decide to leave, but we'll just have to wait and see.
John Terry scored one of England's goal last night, which at least stopped him crying for a few minutes, so frankly comes as a relief to us all. He was looking terribly dehydrated. Even the Demon Headmaster Capello was pleased: "I am very pleased to see him score. I am very happy for him and us. It was important for him to score, he can go on his holiday happy now." Yes, because we would all have felt so sorry for him, jetting off to some sunkissed beach all summer while we stay and slave away in rainy England for a fraction of his wages. At least we know he'll have a nice holiday.
Apparently Fergie 'n' Carlos got away with it yesterday because the FA accused Queiroz of saying "that is my opinion of his job today" when he is believed to have said "that is my opinion of this robber today", referring of course to Martin Atkinson. The FA are reportedly considering appealing against the independent panel's decision. Meanwhile Real Madrid say that they are giving up their chase of Ronaldo because they want to stay friends with United. We'll believe it when we see it.
Speaking of which, here's Henk Ten Cate from earlier in the week: "Half an hour before Chelsea made the message about Grant officially known, I was called by the chief executive Peter Kenyon. He informed me that the departure of Grant will not affect me. In January I had one such evaluation and then we said we would do again after the season. I have a contract until 2010." That's the very same Henk Ten Cate who was sacked by Chelsea today. Presumably Kenyon meant that the sacking of Grant wouldn't affect Ten Cate, because he would be sacked in a completely different sacking a few days later.
